why a puerquito?

it all started with a tiny piggy. my journey to vegetarianism started as a 16 year old biology student forced to participate in dissection of a fetal pig. overcome by compassion, i decided to start my journey of not consuming animals and beginning to investigate how food processing works. when creating the vegan xicana logo i looked around my home for inspiration, this led me to my altar space, it was there that a tiny ceramic piggy bank stood out to me and reminded me of why I document my recipes and kitchen stories and why i am committed to social justice work and community work- my grandmother and my family. a tiny ceramic piggy is an offering i included in my altar to honor and remember my maternal grandmother, mi Nina Geña. as a badass mama, my grandmother hustled hard to take care of her family and supplement her family’s income. this included running a small store from her home and raising pigs to sell to support her large family. i have memories of visiting her home in La Cidrita, Jalisco as a four year old and her gifting me small tiny pig. i also have memories of visiting and knowing where my food came from and her being understanding of me exploring vegetarianism. this little piggy logo reminds me of her sweet spirit and energy and of my commitment to share stories while preserving my culture.
